Tobacco-Free Campus

Athens State University is committed to providing a safe and healthy learning and working environment for its students, employees, and visitors. Therefore, Athens State became a Smoke-Free and Tobacco-Free campus in May 2019.

Athens State University joined over 2,000 colleges and universities nationwide that have implemented a tobacco-free policy for their campus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoke-free and tobacco-free policies can help reduce secondhand smoke exposure, tobacco use initiation, and the social acceptability of tobacco use, promoting an environment that encourages health and well-being.

Smoking, all forms of tobacco, and smoke-related products (including e-cigarettes) are not allowed on University property. This includes facilities, properties, grounds, and any University-owned or leased vehicle. The policy applies to all faculty, staff, students, visitors, and contractors. Athens State respectfully asks all organizers and attendees of public events held on campus (i.e. conferences, meetings, social events, etc.) to abide by this policy and refrain from smoking or using tobacco on campus. A complete list of prohibited items can be found in the official policy document.
