The department of Collaborative and Secondary Studies encompasses 3 educational degree programs: Collaborative K-6, Collaborative 6-12, and Art Education P-12, sharing a fourth-degree, Elementary/Collaborative K-6, with the Elementary and Early Childhood Studies Department. The department also collaborates with the College of Arts and Sciences offering courses for secondary certification (6-12) to our English, history, social sciences, math, and science majors.
Faculty members in Collaborative and Secondary Studies offer a vast range of teaching experiences and research interests. Each faculty member has P-12 teaching experience they integrate into their courses. Those research interests include differentiated instruction and clinical teaching experiences and their impact on beginning teachers.
Our faculty members are very productive and proactive in their teaching and advising. Faculty work diligently to update courses ensuring quality and the latest in research-based methods. A typical work week consists of 10 office hours, teaching 4 courses in various formats including online and traditional, serving as anchors for courses, supervising interns and field experiences as well as advising as many as 100 students through their academic programs.
Collaborative and Secondary Studies faculty members are dedicated to creating Athens State University Success stories and take great pride in producing some of Alabama’s best teacher candidates. This is accomplished through high student expectations delivered through a genuine and caring atmosphere. Collaborative and Secondary Studies faculty members embrace the idea of meeting our students’ needs treating each as individuals. Our faculty pride themselves in taking our students from where they are to graduates who are well prepared for today’s classrooms.
