Elevate Your Career with Athens State’s Master of Arts in Religious Studies

Since the dawn of time, human beings have been engaging in a wide variety of religious practices. Considering the ever-present nature of religion, what does our everlasting devotion to higher powers say about the very nature of humanity?

Athens State University’s fully online Master of Arts in Religious Studies allows you to thoroughly explore that question and others like it. Our dedicated faculty and flexible scheduling will enable you to pursue your degree at your own pace while you strive for greatness in religious studies.

Why Religious Studies?

In the 21st century, religious careers and the study of religion remain relevant due to religion’s enduring influence on cultures and societies globally. With increasing globalization, there is a growing need for religious leaders who can foster interfaith dialogue and promote tolerance.

Additionally, religious studies offer valuable insights into human behavior and existential concerns, contributing to cultural diversity, social cohesion, and the holistic understanding of our interconnected world.

An Unconventional, Fully Online Program

Athens State’s Master of Arts in Religious Studies offers an unconventional approach to religious studies. It is one of the few religious studies graduate degrees that is nondenominational and unaffiliated with any specific religious group.

The program aims to broaden students’ understanding of the historical development and cultural significance of religion, while also enabling students to uncover their own interests within the field.

Our accomplished faculty will also help you develop research projects or career paths that align with the areas you’re passionate about.

Program Highlights

Two-Track Approach

Our program offers the MA in Religious Studies via two different tracks: thesis and non-thesis:

  • The 30-credit thesis track is for students interested in the academic pursuit of religious studies. This track is specifically designed to propel students toward doctoral degrees, teaching positions, or research-related careers.
  • The 36-credit non-thesis track helps students develop the skills they need to advance their careers in faith-based communities and nonprofit organizations. Additional courses help fortify these skillsets, such as the Advanced Study of Social Change, Transformational Leadership, and the Advanced Study of Leading Change in Faith Communities and Other Nonprofits.

Regardless of one’s chosen track, our online program offers flexible course loads and can start during the Fall, Spring, or Summer semesters. Our versatile course schedules and hours are tailored to accommodate diverse lifestyles, empowering you to pursue higher education on your own terms.
