Meet Javian Conley, a current student in the College of Business pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Management and a minor in Operations Management.
Conley is a North Alabama native and looks forward to graduating in December 2024. His experience at Athens State has equipped him with the skills and confidence to excel in his career and beyond.
Conley chose Athens State University because of the respected online degree programs, which allow him to balance his studies with his full-time job as a Grade IV Wastewater Operator for Decatur Utilities. Throughout his Athens State journey, Conley has benefited from exceptional support from faculty and staff. He particularly credits Dr. Kim Roberts for her dedication and mentorship.
“Dr. Roberts goes above and beyond to help me grasp course concepts, discuss career goals, and create ways to achieve those goals,” Conley said.
In addition to his coursework, Conley pursued certifications to enhance his professional qualifications. He earned Lean Six Sigma White and Yellow Belt certifications from Athens State, which are highly regarded in the field of operations management. These certifications, along with his academic coursework, will significantly contribute to his current and future success.
“Athens State has given me the knowledge and pride to know that I can do anything I put my mind to with hard work and dedication,” shared Conley.
In Conley’s position at Decatur Utilities, he is responsible for operating and monitoring wastewater treatment equipment, maintaining plant standards, and ensuring environmental safety. His daily tasks include monitoring SCADA control panels, performing lab tests, and maintaining plant equipment.
“My work gives me a sense of purpose,” said Conley. “It is an essential field for the protection of public health, the surrounding environment, and waterways.”
Conley’s journey at Athens State shines a bright light on the power of a personal higher education experience and the supportive environment provided by the institution. Balancing a full-time job with his studies is challenging, but with the encouragement and resources at Athens State, he is on his way to graduating in December.
“Athens State surrounds you with a support system of individuals that want to see you accomplish all of your goals,” shared Conley.
As Javian Conley prepares to graduate, his story is an inspiration to those balancing work, education, and personal growth, proving that with the right support and determination, success is within reach.
