Meet Phillippia Fuqua, a 2019 graduate from the Alabama Center for the Arts (ACA). Fuqua obtained a Bachelor’s in Art Education with a minor in Educational Technology and currently works as the visual arts teacher at East Limestone High School.

During her time at the ACA, Fuqua was introduced to new art forms that she is now able to incorporate in her classroom. She learned the arts of printmaking and ceramics, which enriched her skillset and ability to work with a variety of mediums. The wide range of course offerings at the ACA strengthened Fuqua’s confidence as a teacher candidate.

“I was able to learn art forms that I did not have access to in middle school and high school,” Fuqua shared. “It meant a lot to me to have the resources to experiment with new materials which I knew would strengthen my abilities as a teacher.”

Fuqua shared that the support she received from professors was above and beyond what she expected. On top of being prepared from a technical standpoint, she was also prepared to face practical issues in the classroom. Her professors at the ACA taught her to create and exercise productive classroom management skills. These skills are what put her a step ahead during her job search.

“My professors were committed to helping my classmates and I find teaching jobs after graduation,” she said.

Fuqua graduated from the ACA with a strong foundation for her classroom management strategies, teaching philosophy, and art skills to pour into her own classroom of art students. She has begun a wonderful career and will continue to succeed because of her hard work and through the impact of her degree from the ACA.
