The Athens State University Board of Trustees has approved an extension of Dr. Catherine Wehlburg’s contract, allowing her to continue serving as the University’s president through May 1, 2030.
The Board approved the extension during its July 17 meeting following the completion of its performance evaluation of Dr. Wehlburg. The decision reflects the Board’s confidence in her leadership, vision, and commitment to the success of Athens State.
“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we are excited that Dr. Wehlburg will be remaining with the University through 2030,” said Senator Arthur Orr, Board Chairman. “She has been a tireless leader and positioned Athens State for greater impact in the years ahead. I truly believe the best is yet to come under Dr. Wehlburg’s leadership.”
Since assuming the presidency in 2024, Dr. Catherine Wehlburg has worked collaboratively with the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners to strengthen Athens State University and expand opportunities for student success. Under her leadership, the University launched its Career Advantage initiative, a student-centered approach designed specifically for adult learners that provides greater flexibility in completing a degree while intentionally connecting academic achievement with career readiness and professional advancement. She has also championed significant campus improvement projects, including the construction of the Nazaretian Alumni Welcome Center, the renovation of Brown Hall, and the ongoing renovation of the Carter Center.

The contract extension provides continuity in leadership as Athens State continues advancing the priorities outlined in its strategic plan. The University remains focused on increasing enrollment, enhancing the success of transfer students and adult learners, promoting innovative teaching and learning, and deepening community engagement and support throughout North Alabama and beyond.
