Athens State University and Jefferson State Community College (JSCC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish new articulation agreements designed to provide seamless transfer pathways for JSCC students pursuing bachelor’s degrees at Athens State. The agreements create distinct pathways for students seeking teacher certification through the B.S.Ed. in Early Childhood Education and those pursuing non-certification opportunities through the B.S.Ed. in Technical Education – Early Instructor Option. This partnership supports degree completion, expands opportunities for professional advancement, and contributes to the continued development of Alabama’s early childhood education workforce.

The agreements establish distinct articulation pathways that recognize eligible child development coursework completed at Jefferson State Community College. Course equivalencies and applicable transfer credits vary based on whether students pursue the teacher certification pathway in Early Childhood Education or the non-certification pathway in Technical Education – Early Instructor Option.

The partnership is intended to facilitate the transfer of academic credit and provide JSCC students with additional opportunities to continue their education at Athens State. The institutions will collaborate to promote the agreement and provide information and support to prospective transfer students.

“Partnerships like this are essential to strengthening Alabama’s early childhood education workforce and creating meaningful opportunities for those who have already committed themselves to working with young children and families,” said Dr. Travis Morgan, Program Coordinator, Early Childhood Programs and Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education. “By recognizing the value of coursework completed at Jefferson State and establishing intentional pathways toward a bachelor’s degree, we are reducing unnecessary barriers to degree completion while expanding opportunities for professional advancement. Whether students aspire to become certified classroom teachers or pursue leadership and other professional roles in early childhood settings, this partnership reflects our shared commitment to preparing a highly qualified workforce that can meet the evolving needs of Alabama’s children, families, and communities.”
