Athens State University has been awarded a $20,000 Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI) Program Improvement Grant from the Alabama State Department of Education to support efforts to strengthen literacy education in Alabama public schools.

The grant is part of the state’s Fiscal Year 2027 initiative to enhance implementation of the Alabama Literacy Act and improve the quality and effectiveness of literacy instruction. The funding awarded to Athens State will support the College of Education’s ongoing efforts to strengthen literacy instruction and prepare future teachers to help young learners become successful readers.

Grant funds will be used during the 2027 fiscal year for approved activities aligned with the grant application and the Alabama State Department of Education’s guidelines. The funding is scheduled to be distributed in November 2026.
