Athens State Names Toni Carter as Director of Kares Library

Athens State University is pleased to announce that Toni Carter will be joining the University as the Director of Kares Library. Carter is scheduled to begin her role on September 7.

Carter received her MLIS in Library and Information Studies and M.A. in History from University of Alabama, and her B.S. in History and Sociology from University of North Alabama. She has 20 years of library experience, serving in roles that include Assistant Librarian for the Virginia Historical Society, Reference and Instruction Librarian at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and most recently, Library Instruction Coordinator at Auburn University. She also has over 15 years of teaching experience, serving in Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor roles at Auburn University. While there, she taught Honors Research Methods; planned, taught, and assessed hundreds of information literacy one-shot sessions; and served as subject liaison to College of Human Sciences, Art, Women’s Studies, and Communication Disorders.

She also served as an Assistant Professor at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where she taught History; planned, taught, and assessed information literacy sessions and workshops; served as subject liaison to History, Criminal Justice, Political Science, and Non-Profit Management & Public Administration departments; served as Office of Student Disabilities representative for library; and served on committees and task forces in the library and campus-wide, including the General Education Committee.

“Toni Carter brings a wealth of experience as a librarian, educator, archivist, and scholar,” said Dr. Catherine Wehlburg, Athens State Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Her passion for information literacy and lifelong educational access is inspiring, and her extensive record of collaboration will build on the Kares Library’s reputation for excellence, innovation, and service to our community.”

Carter shared her excitement for her new role, saying, “I’m thrilled to have an opportunity to lead the dedicated librarians and staff of Kares Library as we anticipate the changing information needs of the Athens State University community and respond by providing essential services, resources, and programs.”
