Why Your Gift Matters

Make A Gift

In 1822, few opportunities existed for women to pursue an education, especially in the south. A group of local citizens saw this as a chance to provide access, and Athens Female Academy became a reality that same year. In 1842, ownership was transferred to the Tennessee Conference of the Methodist Church; men were admitted in 1931; and in 1975 Athens College became part of the Alabama Higher Education system. During this entire time, the doors have never closed.

The founders of Athens Female Academy were the earliest donors, both of financial resources as well as land and personal property. This institution was founded and built on the generosity of individual donors, and it is that same spirit of philanthropy that continues to define our work. Whether your passion is scholarships, emergency student assistance, or any of a myriad of giving options, the impact on the lives of our students is indelible.

If we are to continue changing lives, it is critical that as stewards of this historic institution, we commit to making a difference through private support. Whether you are an alumnus who wishes to pay it forward, a friend who desires the best for our community, or a relative whose family has been transformed by a student who attended Athens State, your gift matters.
