Understand the Past. Examine the Causes.
Help Shape a Better Future.

Genocide is one of the most devastating forms of human violence, leaving lasting consequences for individuals, communities, and societies.

The Undergraduate Certificate in Genocide Studies at Athens State University provides an opportunity to examine the historical, social, political, and cultural forces that contribute to genocide while exploring how individuals and institutions respond to mass violence.

Through interdisciplinary study, you’ll develop a deeper understanding of genocide and related forms of mass atrocity while strengthening the critical-thinking, research, and communication skills needed to engage thoughtfully with some of history’s most difficult questions.

Program Overview

The Undergraduate Certificate in Genocide Studies provides focused, interdisciplinary study of genocide and mass violence across historical and contemporary contexts. You’ll examine the causes, processes, and consequences of genocide while considering the experiences of victims, survivors, perpetrators, bystanders, and communities affected by these events.

The program draws connections across history, sociology, political science, psychology, and other disciplines to help you understand genocide as a complex social phenomenon rather than an isolated historical event. You’ll explore how political conditions, social divisions, ideology, dehumanization, propaganda, and other factors can contribute to mass violence.

The certificate also considers the ways societies remember and respond to genocide. You’ll examine questions surrounding justice, accountability, memorialization, prevention, education, and reconciliation, giving you a broader understanding of how communities confront the legacy of mass atrocities.

Your Career Advantage Starts Here

Genocide Studies can provide valuable preparation for careers and further education involving history, social science, human rights, public service, education, nonprofit organizations, research, and community engagement.

The certificate can complement a variety of degree programs and professional interests. Students studying history, political science, sociology, criminal justice, psychology, education, international studies, or related fields can use the certificate to develop specialized knowledge of mass violence, human rights, and social conflict.

The program also develops transferable skills in research, critical analysis, writing, communication, and evaluating complex information. These skills can be valuable in careers where professionals must understand historical context, assess evidence, communicate difficult ideas, and work thoughtfully with diverse perspectives.

For students planning to continue their education, the certificate can provide a strong foundation for graduate study in history, sociology, political science, international studies, human rights, law, education, or other related fields.
