Sociology

The Sociology degree program at Athens State University is committed to guiding students to become sociologically literate citizens of the 21^st century by providing a broad and balanced view of sociology as a social and natural science.

Students gain a deep understanding of how society works and develop the knowledge, skills, and values consistent with the science and application of sociological principles.  The Sociology degree program emphasizes the value of sociology for developing insight into one’s own and others’ behavior at the institutional level.  In addition, the program focuses on recognizing, understanding, and respecting the complexity of sociocultural diversity.

Students pursuing a Sociology degree are prepared to enter a variety of careers in the helping profession. In addition, the degree prepares students for graduate studies in many subfields of sociology.
