DRAMA AND THEATRE ARTS

Welcome to the Drama Department. The faculty here in the Drama and Theatre Arts program at Athens State University will expand the activities and educational opportunities in the dramatic and theatre arts by offering students with any experience level in college theatre to seamlessly transfer into completing a Bachelor of Arts in Drama and Theatre Arts with Athens State University.  Students earning a BA in Drama and Theatre Arts will acquire various fundamental performance and production techniques, and develop dramaturgical skills by learning to critically analyze dramatic literature, dramatic theory, as well as current trends in the arts.  Set design, lighting, acting, props, stage combat, and music course offerings help create a well-rounded student experience.

Drama and Theatre Arts majors are desirable employee candidates in a variety of areas such as acting, directing, teaching, community arts programs, directing, playwriting, producing, designing, set construction, production management, education, community activism, and art center management.  The required academic training through research and scholarly writing accompanied by practical artistic experience with three annual mainstage productions will allow Drama and Theatre Arts graduates to create a professional portfolio that is immediately applicable to continue their studies in an MA or MFA program in Drama, Theatre Arts, Theatre, Dance, Performance Studies, Acting, Directing, Theatre Arts Administration and many other areas. But more than that, we are an inclusive and engaged community who share a love for the arts community. Please take a moment to explore all we have to offer and don’t hesitate to reach out to us personally if I can be of any assistance.

VISUAL ARTS

Were you the ‘art kid’ growing up? You know you are different and creative. Our art department is, too! In everything we do as faculty in the art department, we challenge the status quo and think uniquely. We know you do, too. Our programs and faculty are driven by a belief; that art students are innovative people. They are comfortable making those intuitive decisions and can change the world through creativity, beauty, and resourcefulness, and students must be challenged in their field of learning through instruction and technology, experiential learning and exhibition. If you are reading this, you are, no doubt, one of those people. You belong here.  But more than that, we are an inclusive and engaged group who share a love for the arts community.

Study in any one of our programs; Art with a certificate in teaching P-12, the B.F.A in Art with a concentration in Ceramics, Graphic Design, Multimedia or Painting and Drawing, or the M.F.A. in Integrative Design and grow with us as artists. A degree gives you time to explore and hone your skills and talent. You can gain your artistic focus and express that better and better over time in your work. Many art courses are taught in a traditional format, yet some are blended or online. You’ll have a choice of class times and a choice in your pace of learning. Transitions from Community Colleges are seamless, and you can complete your 4-year degree in a timely manner. Prepare yourself for a future as an entrepreneur, a graduate student, or an employee or employer in the arts at the state-of-the-art facility at the Alabama Center for the Arts with the Athens State University Art Department.
