One of the best things about Athens State is the campus community, which is described time and time again as a “family atmosphere” where everyone genuinely cares. The high-quality academic experience received at Athens State is accentuated by a robust, exciting student experience — one filled with various clubs and organizations for a variety of interests. The Accounting Club is one of those organizations.
For Valentine’s Day, the Accounting Club at Athens State wanted to fill the gap for community members that may experience loneliness on Valentine’s Day. Students in the Accounting Club made more than 150 Valentine’s cards and goody bags for the residents and staff at Limestone Health Facility Senior Rehab and Recovery Center.
Each goody bag contained a special card, soap, lotion and candy. All of the cards, whether handmade or bought, carried the same message: “You are Loved.” The students wanted to provide a meaningful yet practical gesture of thoughtfulness and service for the residents and staff at the center.
Professors Diann Hammon and Emily Corzine delivered the Valentine’s Day goody bags and learned that many of the residents do not have family who visits them. The impact of this service project goes beyond simply filling and delivering bags, it goes into the heart of each recipient and reminds them that someone genuinely cares for them.
