GE Aerospace has selected Athens State University to receive a $4,000 charitable contribution to go toward targeted STEM equipment to support North Alabama’s STEM talent. The funds will be used to purchase two ProSolo Digital Water Quality Meters with probes, expanding hands-on STEM learning opportunities for students in North Alabama, strengthening workforce preparation for the region’s growing science and technology sectors.
The need for skilled STEM professionals continues to grow across North Alabama. The Huntsville metropolitan area is one of the nation’s fastest-growing STEM hubs, with industries such as aerospace, biotechnology, computing, and defense driving significant employment growth. However, workforce projections indicate a substantial shortage of qualified workers in STEM and healthcare fields over the next decade, creating an urgent need to develop local talent pipelines.
To help address this need, Athens State plans to purchase advanced field equipment, including a Trimble handheld GPS unit and digital water quality meters. These tools will provide students with hands-on experience using industry-relevant technology, allowing them to develop practical skills in data collection, field analysis, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Access to modern equipment will enhance classroom instruction and better prepare graduates for careers in science, engineering, environmental studies, and related disciplines.
By investing in STEM education and experiential learning opportunities, Athens State will continue to equip students with the knowledge and technical skills needed to contribute to North Alabama’s workforce while supporting the region’s long-term economic growth. “The water quality meters supported by this grant will enable Athens State students to apply core STEM concepts in real-world scenarios using professional instrumentation, improving career preparation and adding to our knowledge of local aquatic ecosystems,” said Dr. Shannon Pittman, Associate Professor of Biology.
