Program Overview
Great history teachers do more than teach dates and events. They help students understand how the past shapes the present, evaluate evidence, consider different perspectives, and develop the critical-thinking skills needed to become informed citizens.
The Bachelor of Arts in History with a Minor in Education brings together the study of history and preparation for a career in secondary education. You’ll build broad knowledge of American, European, and world history while learning how to research historical questions, evaluate evidence, construct arguments, and communicate ideas effectively.
Your Education minor adds the instructional foundation needed to apply that knowledge in the classroom. You’ll explore how students learn and develop while gaining knowledge of teaching methods, classroom management, assessment, curriculum, and other principles of effective instruction. The program is designed for students who want to pursue teaching opportunities with students in grades 6-12 and share their interest in history with the next generation.
What You’ll Learn
The History program gives you a broad understanding of the people, events, cultures, institutions, and ideas that have shaped societies over time. You’ll study history from multiple perspectives while learning to place events in context and understand the forces that influenced them.
You’ll develop practical research skills as you work with primary and secondary sources and learn to evaluate evidence, recognize perspective and bias, identify historical patterns, and construct well-supported conclusions. Your coursework will also strengthen your writing and communication skills so you can explain complex historical ideas clearly and effectively.
The Education minor adds the knowledge needed to translate that subject expertise into effective instruction. You’ll explore student development, instructional strategies, classroom management, assessment, and other practices that support student learning.
Together, these areas of study prepare you to understand both what you teach and how to help students learn it. By completing the program, you’ll have a strong academic foundation in history and education that can prepare you to pursue teaching opportunities with students in grades 6-12, subject to applicable state certification and licensure requirements.
