Secondary Studies
Prepare to Inspire the Next Generation
Teaching is more than sharing what you know. It’s about helping students discover what they’re capable of becoming.
Athens State University’s Secondary Studies programs prepare future educators to make a difference in the lives of middle and high school students. Through a combination of subject-area expertise, professional education coursework, hands-on experiences, and personalized support, students develop the knowledge and skills they need to become confident, effective educators.
Where Knowledge Meets the Classroom
Secondary Studies works closely with the College of Arts & Sciences to prepare students for careers teaching grades 6–12. Students pursuing secondary certification complete a degree in their chosen content area through the College of Arts & Sciences while completing education coursework through the College of Education.
This approach allows you to build deep knowledge in the subject you love while developing the teaching skills needed to bring that knowledge to life in the classroom.
Experience Teaching Before You Graduate
Becoming an effective educator requires more than learning about teaching. It requires experience doing it.
Secondary Studies students participate in field experiences, practicum opportunities, and clinical teaching experiences that allow them to apply what they’re learning in authentic educational settings. Through these experiences, students gain valuable classroom knowledge and develop the confidence to lead and engage learners.
The result is a teacher candidate who is prepared not only to enter the classroom, but to make a meaningful impact once they get there.
