A bachelor’s degree in mathematics is an undergraduate degree that prepares students for careers in government, business, and the industry or for pursuing graduate studies. Students will develop a broad knowledge of mathematics topics, providing theory and training in both applied and core mathematics.
Mathematics Degree Overview
Along with 41 general education requirements hours, students will complete 18 hours in major prerequisite courses: Precalculus Trigonometry, Calculus I, II, and III as well as Microcomputer Applications.
As part of their major requirements, students will complete a broad array of mathematical topics including:
Applied Differential Equations
Applied Probability and Statistics
Advanced Mathematical Software
As part of the 37 hours needed to meet the degree requirements, students will also take one of three elective sequences as well as a senior seminar. Please see the course catalog for a full list of courses.
Finally, an exit exam is required for graduation. The non-licensure Mathematics major may choose the PRAXIS II Mathematics Content Test 5161 as their exit exam, or the departmental exit exam may be taken in the MA 470 course.
Bachelor’s of Science in Mathematics for Educators
For students interested in teaching math at the K-12 level, students pursuing a degree in math may complete a minor in education. The minor in education prepares students to teach mathematics at the high school or middle-grade level. The Mathematics major with a minor in Education is required to take the Praxis II Mathematics Content Test.
ASSIST Scholarship Program
Financial support is also provided for students interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. The Athens State Scholars in STEM (ASSIST) is a National Science Foundation-funded scholarship available to students majoring in the following: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Information Technology, and Mathematics. Students accepted into this program will receive yearly scholarship funds and access to additional support programs including faculty mentoring, peer support activities, online tutoring, and career development activities such as travel to professional conferences and/or research materials. The goal of this program is to help our STEM students efficiently complete their degrees and enter the workforce and/or graduate school.
